Assembly Elections 2024: Process begins in Jammu and Kashmir today, notification issued for 24 seats

The process of assembly elections has started in Jammu and Kashmir from today on August 20. Notification for the first phase of voting will be issued today. The last date for filing nominations has been fixed as August 27.

After a long wait of 10 years, assembly elections are going to held here. Voting for the first phase is to be held on 18 September for 24 assembly constituencie. In this, 16 seats are from Kashmir Valley, while 8 seats are from Jammu region. The parties can announce its candidates in a day or two.

It is pertinent to mention that after becoming a Union Territory in the year 2019 and removal of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir is ready for its first assembly elections in a decade. After the redrawing of constituencies in 2022, the number of assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir has increased to 90. This includes 47 seats in the Kashmir Valley and 43 in Jammu.

Voting will be held on these seats in the first phase-Pampore-Tral- Pulwama-Rajpora-Jainapora-Shopian-D.H.Pora-Kulgam-Devsar-Dooru-Kokernag (ST)- Anantnag West- Anantnag- Srigufwara-Bijbehara -Shangas-Anantnag East- Pahalgam- Inderwal- Kishtwar- Padder- Nagseni- Bhaderwah- Doda- Doda West- Ramban- Banihal.

This will be the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir after 2014. In 2014, votes were cast for 87 assembly seats in the state. Then the People’s Democratic Party emerged as the largest party by winning 28 seats. At the same time, BJP won 25 seats. National Conference won 15 seats and Congress won 12 seats. At that time, no party could reach the magic figure of 44 seats required for a majority. After the announcement of the election results, the first and second ranked parties PDP and BJP formed a coalition government under the leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed which saw an awkward end & from that time there is LG Administration in the JKUT.
