The Panchayat and urban body elections in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to be held before the end of December 2024
The Panchayat and urban body elections in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to be held before the end of December 2024.The communication from the State Election Commission (Election Authority) of Jammu & Kashmir is a directive to all District Deputy Commissioners, requesting them to provide soft copies of the Final Panchayat Electoral Roll-2024 (without photos). These copies are to be submitted via email to [email protected] for uploading on the commission’s official website. The request, dated October 9, 2024, is essential for preparing the voter lists for the upcoming Panchayat elections.
This decision follows the successful completion of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections earlier in the year. Security forces deployed during those elections will remain in the Union Territory to ensure the peaceful conduct of these local elections. The delay in holding these elections, particularly for municipal corporations in Jammu and Srinagar, which expired last November, has made their completion a priority. Once these polls are conducted, all democratic processes in J&K, from the grassroots level up, will be in place post the abrogation of Article 370.Nearly 30,000 panches and sarpanches, whose terms ended in early January 2024, will be replaced following fresh delimitation of the ‘Halqas’ (Revenue Villages).
