On December 24, 2024, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting in Srinagar to assess Jammu and Kashmir’s preparedness for the ongoing harsh winter conditions. In light of the severe cold wave gripping the region, he emphasized the necessity for all departments to enhance their efforts to ensure the well-being of the public.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the Power Development Department (PDD) to adhere strictly to the announced power curtailment schedules, minimizing unexpected outages that have been causing significant inconvenience to residents. He reiterated his commitment to personally oversee the implementation of these schedules to maintain public trust.

Additionally, Abdullah instructed the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to ensure uninterrupted water supply, despite challenges posed by freezing temperatures. He also called upon the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Public Works Department to be on high alert for snow clearance operations, ensuring that all major roads and highways remain accessible.

Recognizing the importance of effective communication during emergencies, the Chief Minister urged the Disaster Management Department to keep the public informed about weather forecasts and safety advisories. He also stressed the need for adequate stocking of essential commodities in remote and snow-bound areas to prevent shortages.

In a related development, Abdullah canceled his scheduled visit to Jammu to remain in Srinagar, citing the need to personally monitor the functioning of essential services amid the cold wave. He stated, “In light of the severe cold spell in the Kashmir valley and the resultant difficulties with water and electricity supply, I have decided to cancel my forthcoming programmes in Jammu and station myself in Srinagar for the next week to personally monitor the functioning of the power department and other important departments.”
