MP Engineer Rashid Raises Civilian Deaths in Parliament: Calls for Impartial Probe

New Delhi, Feb 11: In his maiden speech during the ongoing Budget session, Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, strongly raised concerns over the recent civilian deaths in Kathua and Baramulla, asserting that “the blood of Kashmiris is not cheap.” Rashid, who has been in Tihar Jail since 2019, was granted two-day custody parole by the Delhi High Court on Monday to attend the session.
Addressing the Parliament, Rashid demanded an impartial investigation into the deaths of Waseem Ahmed Mir, who was killed in Army firing during a naka checking in Baramulla, and Makhan Din, who allegedly died by suicide due to police atrocities in Kathua. These incidents have sparked widespread outrage, with political leaders urging a thorough probe.
“Our blood is not cheap. We have the right to live,” Rashid asserted, questioning the role of security forces. He further asked, “Do our forces need Waseem Mir’s blood every day?” while urging the government to ensure justice for both victims.
Beyond these incidents, Rashid also highlighted the challenges faced by residents of remote areas in north Kashmir, particularly in Karna, Keran, and Machil. He stressed the need for better connectivity, urging the government to construct a tunnel for these regions, as residents struggle to survive for months in harsh conditions.
Elected as Member of Parliament from Baramulla in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rashid remains in custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with a 2017 terror-funding case. The Delhi High Court’s parole order allows him to participate in the Parliament session under strict restrictions, barring him from using the internet or speaking to the media.
