Mandatory CCTV Installation Ordered in Jammu to Boost Public Security

Jammu, February 17, 2025: In a significant move to enhance public safety, District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya has issued an order mandating the installation of CCTV cameras at key establishments across Jammu. The directive, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, aims to strengthen surveillance through advanced technology.
The order applies to various high-footfall locations, including banks, ATMs, jewellery shops, petrol pumps, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, cinemas, liquor shops, educational institutions, places of worship, transportation hubs, hospitals, and offices.
As per the guidelines, establishments and market associations must install CCTV systems within two weeks, ensuring coverage of entry and exit points up to 40 meters. The cameras must maintain a minimum resolution of 1920×1080, operate continuously with a power backup, and store footage for at least 30 days. Additionally, businesses are required to provide footage to law enforcement agencies upon request and report any suspicious activity to the local Station House Officers (SHOs).
To ensure compliance, SHOs will compile and submit a list of non-compliant establishments to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu.
The order is effective from February 17, 2025, for an initial period of eight weeks, with provisions for extension or modification. Non-compliance may lead to legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Authorities emphasize that this measure is crucial for improving public safety and aiding in crime prevention across the district.
