Legislators Discuss Key Public Welfare Issues on Third Day of Motion of Thanks in J&K Assembly

JAMMU, March 6: On the third consecutive day of discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s address, legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly raised a wide range of public welfare issues, focusing on development, employment, social justice, and restoration of statehood.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma highlighted the significant developmental strides made in recent years, including the construction of new highways, enhanced railway connectivity, solar energy projects, and the increase in MBBS seats across Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).

MLA Ajaz Jan lauded the government for its public welfare measures, stating that the formation of the present administration has brought “a sigh of relief” to the people.

Raising critical concerns, MLA Dr. Shafi Ahmad Wani stressed the need to address rising drug addiction, unemployment, and illegal mining, while expressing confidence that the government’s commitment and sincerity would fulfill the promises made to the people.

MLA Sajad Gani Lone called on the government to deliver on its commitments, while senior leader Mohamad Yusuf Tarigami reminded legislators of their accountability to the people and urged them to prioritize public interest.

MLA Mehraj Malik advocated for increased honorariums for contractual employees and emphasized the untapped tourism potential of Jammu and Kashmir as a means to boost employment.

MLA Altaf Ahmad Wani praised the government’s inclusive approach in budget consultations and called for rehabilitation plans for families and traders impacted by infrastructure projects near Pahalgam, along with a comprehensive tourism policy for the region.

MLAs Ali Mohammad Dar, Shakti Raj Parihar, Reyaz Khan, Ranbir Singh Pathania, and Choudhary Mohammad Akram raised concerns about filling government vacancies, reservation policies, daily wagers’ regularization, and rising electricity bills, with calls for concrete steps to provide relief to the public.

Sheikh Khursheed demanded a one-time amnesty on electricity dues, while Dr. Sajad Shafi Uri emphasized unity across party lines to work for the restoration of statehood and development of border tourism in Uri.

MLA Shabir Kullay urged legislators to jointly petition the Apex Court for expedited restoration of statehood, a sentiment echoed by MLA Javid Hussain Beigh, who described statehood restoration as a vital “healing touch” for Jammu and Kashmir.

MLA Pawan Gupta also called for increased minimum wages for daily wagers and timely redressal of their grievances.

As discussions continue, the collective focus remains on addressing public welfare, safeguarding employment, boosting infrastructure, and restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, as pledged by the central government.
