Kargil, Ladakh – March 14, 2025: A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.2 jolted Kargil, Ladakh, in the early hours of Friday, sending tremors across the region, including Jammu and Kashmir. According to the National Center for Seismology, the quake struck at 2:50 AM at a depth of 15 kilometers.

The epicenter was recorded at latitude 33.37°N and longitude 76.76°E in the Kargil district, an area known for its seismic activity due to its location in Seismic Zone-IV. While no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties have emerged, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious.

Ladakh and its surrounding regions, situated in the tectonically active Himalayan belt, frequently experience earthquakes. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) classifies Ladakh in Zone IV, indicating a high risk of seismic activity. Given the vulnerability of the region, officials continue to emphasize the importance of earthquake preparedness and safety measures.

Residents reported feeling strong tremors in Kargil and adjoining areas, with some experiencing minor shaking in Leh and parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Emergency response teams are monitoring the situation, and authorities are assessing any potential structural damage.
