NASA Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore Return to Earth After Extended Space Mission
March 19, 2025 – NASA astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore have safely returned to Earth following an extended nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their spacecraft, SpaceX’s Dragon Freedom capsule, successfully splashed down off the Florida coast near Tallahassee at approximately 3:27 AM IST on Wednesday.
Originally launched to the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s Starliner for what was intended to be an eight-day mission, Williams and Wilmore faced an unexpected extension of their stay due to technical issues with the spacecraft. These challenges necessitated a prolonged mission, during which the astronauts continued their work aboard the orbital laboratory.
NASA coordinated with SpaceX to facilitate their return, culminating in the successful splashdown of the Dragon Freedom capsule. Upon landing, the astronauts were greeted by an unexpected sight—a pod of dolphins surrounded their capsule, providing a unique welcome back to Earth’s oceans.
