New Delhi, Apr 18: In a significant move to enhance road safety and ensure the accuracy of traffic enforcement across the country, the government has announced that new regulations mandating the verification and stamping of traffic radar equipment will come into effect from July 1, 2025.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry, following extensive consultations with stakeholders—including the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, Regional Reference Laboratories, manufacturers, and vehicle certification bodies—has notified the rules under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.

The regulations apply to microwave Doppler radar equipment, widely used for monitoring vehicle speeds on roads. These rules lay down strict technical and safety requirements, ensuring proper calibration, consistent performance under diverse environmental conditions, and safeguards against tampering.

According to the ministry, all radar-based speed measurement devices will be required to undergo official verification and receive a certification stamp before being deployed. This process aims to ensure precision in speed and distance readings—an essential component in fair traffic law enforcement.

The move is expected to bring significant benefits to various stakeholders:

For citizens, it promises more accurate speed limit enforcement, reducing the chances of unjust penalties and improving overall road safety.

For manufacturers, it provides a clear regulatory and technical framework aligned with global standards.

For law enforcement agencies, it enhances the credibility and operational effectiveness of speed monitoring devices.

Described as a major step towards data-driven traffic governance, the initiative is also expected to contribute to reduced road fatalities, better highway discipline, and lower economic and social costs from road mishaps and infrastructure damage.
