Justice Gavai to Become 52nd Chief Justice of India for a Six-Month Term

New Delhi, Apr 18: Justice B.R. Gavai is set to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding the current CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whose tenure ends on May 13, 2025.
The Law Ministry had formally requested CJI Khanna to recommend his successor, following which he proposed the name of Justice Gavai for the top judicial post. Justice Gavai will take oath as the next Chief Justice on May 14, 2025.
Justice Gavai will serve a tenure of approximately six months as the head of the Supreme Court.
This appointment follows the established convention of seniority in the judiciary, and his elevation marks another significant chapter in the leadership of the Indian judiciary.
