Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday emphasized the need for a shift in Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, advocating for a “high-value” approach that prioritizes quality experiences over high visitor volumes. At a high-level meeting held in the civil secretariat to review the Tourism Department’s progress, Abdullah highlighted tourism’s potential to boost employment and urged a long-term, structured strategy for the sector.

The Chief Minister stressed the need for a tourist-centric perspective, encouraging efforts to enhance the visitor experience to ensure tourists are likely to return and recommend J&K as a top destination. Abdullah also underscored the importance of promoting adventure tourism, such as skiing and river rafting, while reviewing the implementation of central schemes like the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) and Swadesh Darshan.

Addressing environmental concerns, Abdullah expressed dissatisfaction with the waste management at Gulmarg, calling for immediate improvements to maintain the area’s appeal as a premier ski resort. He proposed sustainable upgrades for the region, including revitalizing the Gondola cable car service, which has been plagued by ticketing issues and black marketing. He directed the J&K Cable Car Corporation to streamline the ticketing process with advanced technology to ensure easy access for visitors.

Abdullah also discussed the potential of Sonamarg as a skiing hub and recommended expert consultations for the alignment of skiing drag lifts, ensuring plans account for climate change impacts. He called for environmentally conscious infrastructure that respects J&K’s heritage and architecture, suggesting green-field tourism projects in the region.

Furthermore, Abdullah noted the urgent need for garbage disposal campaigns, additional wayside amenities, and certified clean toilet facilities along major routes to enhance visitor satisfaction. He proposed a feedback portal linked to his office, allowing tourists to share their experiences and suggestions.

The Chief Minister concluded by stressing the importance of community involvement in tourism projects, advocating for heritage preservation and environmental sustainability. He also recommended routine inspections of homestay facilities to maintain high standards, ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors.

This renewed focus on sustainable tourism marks a strategic shift aimed at positioning J&K as a high-quality, environmentally conscious
