CTET Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Eligibility criteria


The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India for candidates who wish to become teachers in government schools from class I to VIII. The exam is conducted twice a year.

Here are the details of the CTET exam pattern, syllabus, and eligibility criteria:

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. For Primary Stage (Class I-V):
  • Candidates should have passed Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks and should have passed or appearing in the final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.

OR

  • Candidates should have passed Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 45% marks and should have passed or appearing in the final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations, 2002.

OR

  • Candidates should have passed Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks and should have passed or appearing in the final year of 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed).

OR

  • Candidates should have passed Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks and should have passed or appearing in the final year of 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education)*.
  1. For Elementary Stage (Class VI-VIII):
  • Candidates should have a Graduation degree or equivalent and should have passed or appearing in the final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.

OR

  • Candidates should have a Graduation degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks and should have passed or appearing in 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed).

OR

  • Candidates should have a Graduation degree or equivalent with at least 45% marks and should have passed or appearing in 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed), in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations issued from time to time.

OR

  • Candidates should have a Graduation degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks and should have passed or appearing in 1-year B.Ed. (Special Education)*.

Exam Pattern:

The CTET exam consists of two papers:

Paper I: For candidates who wish to teach from Class I to V Paper II: For candidates who wish to teach from Class VI to VIII

Both the papers have the same exam pattern:

  • The exam is conducted in offline mode (pen-paper mode).
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours and 30 minutes.
  • The exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
  • Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking.
  • The exam consists of 150 questions.
  • The exam is bilingual (English and Hindi).
  • The exam consists of five sections:
    • Child Development and Pedagogy
    • Language I (compulsory)
    • Language II (compulsory)
    • Mathematics and Science (for candidates who wish to teach from Class I to V)
    • Social Studies/Social Science (for candidates who wish to teach from Class VI to VIII)
