New Delhi, January 9, 2025:
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has addressed recent concerns regarding the functioning of the Right to Information (RTI) portal following the introduction of a One-Time Password (OTP) feature on January 2, 2025. The department assured the public that the portal is operating effectively, with the new feature enhancing security and user authentication processes.

Enhanced Security for RTI Applications

The newly introduced OTP system aims to safeguard sensitive personal information included in RTI applications by ensuring that only authorized users access the portal. This step aligns with global cybersecurity best practices, providing a layer of protection for both applicants and their data.

Addressing User Concerns

  • Delays in OTP Delivery:
The DoPT acknowledged reports of occasional delays in OTP delivery, citing high traffic on email servers as a potential cause. However, it clarified that OTPs remain valid until used, allowing users to log in and track their applications once the OTP is received.
  • Functionality and Adoption:
Since the system’s implementation, over 9,782 users have successfully accessed RTI application statuses, reflecting the reliability of the updated protocol.
  • Criticism of Added Steps:
While some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the additional authentication step, the DoPT emphasized that the measure is necessary for enhanced privacy and security, reassuring users that the portal has undergone rigorous testing to ensure ease of use.

Support Services for Users

In response to complaints about inaccessible helpline services, the DoPT highlighted the availability of the RTI Help Desk at 011-24622461 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, excluding public holidays). The department encouraged users to reach out for assistance and promised swift resolution of grievances.

Commitment to Transparency and Efficiency

The DoPT reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the RTI portal’s efficiency while ensuring transparency and user satisfaction. The recent updates are part of the government’s ongoing initiative to enhance the reliability of digital platforms and safeguard citizens’ rights under the RTI Act.

Continuous monitoring of the system will ensure that the portal remains accessible and user-friendly, reinforcing public trust in the RTI framework.
