Dr. Moumita Debnath, a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, was found brutally raped and murdered on August 9, 2024. The horrific incident occurred in the hospital’s seminar room between 3:00 and 5:00 AM. The postmortem revealed that she was strangled, leading to the breaking of her thyroid cartilage, and had severe injuries on her body, including her face, lips, and legs. She also suffered genital torture, indicating a heinous sexual assault.

The case sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests by doctors and medical staff across India. A civic volunteer named Sanjoy Roy, stationed at the hospital, was arrested after CCTV footage placed him at the scene during the crime. The incident has drawn significant criticism towards the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police, with many questioning the safety and security measures for women in the state.

The Kolkata Police initially suggested that Dr. Moumita Debnath’s death could have been a suicide. This assumption was a foul play & additionally, there were attempts by some hospital authorities to downplay the incident as a suicide to avoid scandal and public outrage. However, the situation changed dramatically after the autopsy report revealed clear signs of sexual assault and strangulation, which made it evident that the death was a result of foul play. The postmortem findings, along with CCTV footage that implicated a suspect, forced the police to reconsider their initial assessment and treat the case as a rape and murder.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently taken over the investigation into the brutal rape and murder of Dr. Moumita Debnath at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This shift occurred following a Calcutta High Court order, driven by widespread protests and concerns about the initial handling of the case by local authorities. Justice T.S. Sivagnanam stated that there had been “no significant progress” in the investigation & concerns about potential evidence destruction.

The CBI team from Delhi arrived in Kolkata and immediately began their probe, which includes re-examining evidence, questioning individuals connected to the case, and scrutinizing the role of the arrested civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, who was initially implicated. In the investigation the needle of suspicion was also towards the Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical Collegevwho had resigned from his position shortly after the incident. CBI earlier also questioned him in this regard.
