Exam Pattern,Salary, Eligibility, Syllabus and Selection Process of SSC – Stenographers Gr (C & D)

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts an annual competitive examination for recruitment to the post of Stenographers Grade C & D. The Stenographers are responsible for transcribing speech into text and producing official transcripts.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the SSC Stenographer exam, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India.

  2. Age Limit: The candidate must be between 18 and 30 years old as on the date specified in the notification.

  3. Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed 12th standard or its equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

Exam Pattern: The SSC Stenographer exam consists of a computer-based online test followed by a skill test in stenography.

The computer-based online test is an objective type examination consisting of 200 questions carrying 1 mark each. The total duration of the examination is 2 hours. The questions are divided into three sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension.

The skill test in stenography is conducted to test the candidates’ ability to take dictation at a speed of 100 words per minute for Grade C and 80 words per minute for Grade D. The candidates are required to transcribe the dictated passage on a computer within the given time frame.

Syllabus: The syllabus for the SSC Stenographer exam is as follows:

  1. General Intelligence & Reasoning: Analogies, Similarities and Differences, Space Visualization, Problem Solving, Analysis, Judgment, Decision Making, Visual Memory, Discriminating Observation, Relationship Concepts, Arithmetical Reasoning, Verbal and Figure Classification, Arithmetical Number Series, Non-Verbal Series, etc.

  2. General Awareness: Current Affairs, Indian History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy, Scientific Research, etc.

  3. English Language & Comprehension: Vocabulary, Grammar, Sentence Structure, Synonyms, Antonyms, Comprehension, etc.

Selection Process: The selection process for the SSC Stenographer exam consists of two stages:

  1. Computer-Based Online Test: Candidates who qualify in the online test will be shortlisted for the skill test in stenography.

  2. Skill Test in Stenography: Candidates who qualify in the skill test in stenography will be selected for the post of Stenographer Grade C or Grade D based on their performance in the online test and the skill test.

Salary: The salary of SSC Stenographer Grade C & D ranges from Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 92,300 per month, depending on the post and the location of posting. In addition to the basic pay, the Stenographers are also entitled to various allowances and benefits as per government norms.
