Former J&K MP Shamsher Singh Manhas Passes Away at 65

Jammu: Shamsher Singh Manhas, a prominent political and social figure in Jammu & Kashmir, passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 65 after battling illness. Born on January 4, 1960, he was the son of Janak Singh and an agriculturist by profession. Known for his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Manhas played a key role in rejuvenating Right-wing Hindu political ideology in the region.

A dedicated Pracharak of the RSS, he emerged as a powerful political leader in J&K. Shamsher Singh Manhas served as the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected to the Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket from J&K in February 2015. His tenure in the Upper House witnessed his active engagement in political and social causes.

Apart from politics, he was also a sportsperson and contributed significantly to the development of the region. Manhas retired from active politics on February 9, 2021, but remained a respected figure for his contributions to J&K’s socio-political landscape.

His untimely demise has left a void in the political sphere, with leaders and citizens mourning the loss of a stalwart who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the region.
