Gurez Valley Shines as Emerging Tourist Hub: Government Considers Tourism Development Authority

Srinagar, March 5:
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced in the Legislative Assembly that Gurez Valley is rapidly gaining prominence as a unique tourist destination, with the government actively considering the establishment of a dedicated Tourism Development Authority for the region.
Responding to a question from legislator Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi, the Chief Minister highlighted Gurez Valley’s recent achievements on the tourism front. “In 2022, Gurez Valley was honored with the ‘Best Offbeat Destination’ award, putting it firmly on the map as an emerging hotspot for travelers seeking unexplored beauty,” he said.
Further adding to its accolades, Dawar village in Gurez secured the prestigious ‘Best Tourism Village’ award in the Gold category from the Union Ministry of Tourism in September 2023. “This recognition underlines the village’s rich cultural heritage and its growing potential to attract visitors,” Abdullah stated.
To boost tourism in the valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has introduced a range of initiatives, including the launch of commercial rafting in Gurez for the first time in 2024. Additionally, the department has proposed the upgradation of Gurez as part of the 2024-25 Capex Budget, aiming to enhance infrastructure and visitor experience in this offbeat destination.
With these ongoing developments, the government is now evaluating the need to establish a Tourism Development Authority specifically for Gurez to streamline promotion and development efforts, the Chief Minister informed the House.
Officials believe these steps will help Gurez Valley unlock its full tourism potential, creating new opportunities for local communities and establishing the region as a must-visit destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
