New Delhi, May 10, 2025 – In a significant breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following intense overnight talks mediated by the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday. The announcement marks a critical step toward de-escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, which had reached a boiling point in recent days.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire agreement, stating on X, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.” The announcement was echoed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized the need for constructive dialogue to maintain peace in the region.

The ceasefire comes after days of heightened hostilities triggered by a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. India’s subsequent military operation, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir on May 7, prompting retaliatory strikes from Pakistan, including drone attacks and artillery fire along the Line of Control (LoC). Both nations accused each other of violating the 2021 ceasefire agreement, leading to civilian casualties and widespread alarm.

The Group of Seven (G7) nations and the U.S. had urged both countries to engage in direct dialogue to prevent further escalation, with fears mounting over the potential use of nuclear arsenals. The U.S. offered assistance to facilitate talks, culminating in the successful mediation.

Indian and Pakistani officials have not yet released detailed terms of the ceasefire, but sources indicate that both sides have committed to halting all cross-border military actions. The Indian Ministry of Defence and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry are expected to hold briefings later today to address the agreement and next steps.

The international community has welcomed the development, with calls for both nations to pursue sustained diplomatic efforts to address underlying issues, particularly the long-standing dispute over Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani authorities are under pressure to ensure the ceasefire holds, as analysts warn that any violation could reignite tensions.

This ceasefire marks a rare moment of cooperation between India and Pakistan, whose rivalry has persisted for nearly eight decades. The world watches closely as both nations navigate the path to lasting peace.
