Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana Reviews Water Supply Schemes in Kashmir: Pushes for Swift Action

Srinagar, April 25, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir’s Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, conducted a high-level meeting with Superintending Engineers at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar to assess the progress of ongoing Water Supply Schemes (WSSs) under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in the Kashmir division. The meeting, attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, focused on ensuring effective implementation and timely completion of these critical projects aimed at providing potable water to rural households.
During the review, Minister Rana emphasized the need for rigorous supervision to maintain high water quality standards and directed officials to expedite pending projects under the JJM. He reviewed the department’s functioning, physical targets achieved, fund utilization, and the overall progress of schemes designed to deliver clean drinking water across the region.
In a proactive move to address public grievances, Rana called for the establishment of an efficient complaint redressal system to promptly resolve water supply-related issues faced by the general public. “Our priority is to ensure every household has access to clean and reliable water supply. Superintending Engineers must monitor schemes closely and take proactive steps to address challenges,” he stated.
The minister’s directives align with the JJM’s goal of providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to all rural households, ensuring 55 liters of clean drinking water per capita daily, in line with BIS standards. The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing water infrastructure and achieving the mission’s objectives in Jammu and Kashmir.
This initiative follows recent concerns raised in the J&K Legislative Assembly about alleged irregularities in JJM execution, with a House Committee formed to probe these issues. Rana’s proactive approach signals a renewed focus on transparency, accountability, and public welfare in the region’s water supply efforts.
