Justice Sanjiv Khanna took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India

Today, on 11 November 2024, Justice Sanjiv Khanna took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to him at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna is counted among the respected jurists of the country, and is known to be committed to reforming the Indian judiciary and ensuring speedy access to justice.Justice Sanjiv Khanna replaced Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who was famous for many landmark judgments during his tenure. Justice Khanna’s tenure will be about 15 months, in which he can take many important steps towards transparency, fairness, and reform of the judicial system in the Indian judiciary.Justice Khanna’s judicial career began from the Delhi High Court, where he gave judgments on important civil and constitutional matters. Even during his tenure in the Supreme Court, he has demonstrated his skill in the judicial system by giving accurate judgments in many sensitive and complex cases. Under the leadership of Justice Khanna, it is expected that the Supreme Court will not only focus on disposal of pending cases but also implement new schemes to ensure timeliness of justice.
