NC and BJP Secure Key Wins in JKUT Elections while Congress routed: Er Rashid turns table on Omar Abdullah
In a significant electoral outcome, the National Conference (NC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have secured major victories in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (JKUT) elections, with Independent candidate Engineer Rashid Sheikh also clinching a seat. The results reflect a diverse political landscape with different parties dominating in different regions.
Srinagar Constituency:
Aga Syed Ruhullah of the National Conference emerged victorious with a substantial lead, securing 3,56,866 votes. His closest competitor, Waheedur Rehman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 1,68,450 votes.
Anantnag Constituency:
Mian Altaf Ahmad, also from the National Conference, won convincingly with 5,21,836 votes. He defeated Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP, who received 2,40,042 votes. The NC’s winning margin was an impressive 2,81,794 votes.
Baramulla Constituency:
Independent candidate Sheikh Abdul Rashid achieved a remarkable victory with 4,72,481 votes defeating Omar Abdullah of the NC who received 2,68,339 votes. Sajad Lone of the People’s Conference (PC) secured 1,73,239 votes. Rashid’s winning margin stood at 2,04,142 votes. Omar Abdullah while accepting his defeat posted on X, “I think it’s time to accept the inevitable. Congratulations to Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir. I don’t believe his victory will hasten his release from prison nor will the people of North Kashmir get the representation they have a right to but the voters have spoken and in a democracy that’s all that matters.”
Udhampur Constituency:
Dr. Jitendra Singh of the BJP won with 5,71,076 votes, defeating Ch. Lal Singh of the Indian National Congress (INC), who obtained 4,46,703 votes. GM Saroori of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) received 39,599 votes. The BJP’s winning margin was 1,24,373 votes.
Jammu Constituency:
Jugal Kishore Sharma of the BJP emerged victorious with 6,87,588 votes, overcoming Raman Bhalla of the INC, who received 5,52,090 votes. The BJP’s winning margin in this constituency was 1,35,498 votes.
These results highlight the dynamic political environment in JKUT, with the NC and BJP securing significant wins, and a jailed candidate making a notable impact.
