New Delhi: After a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the capital, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah shared insights on the discussion centered around the implementation of the newly enacted criminal laws across the Union Territory.

Speaking to the media following the meeting, Abdullah stated that the conversation primarily focused on the execution of these laws, their limitations, and the steps required to enhance their implementation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“It was a discussion with the Home Minister on the new criminal laws that have been implemented—how they are being implemented and what the limitations are. It is now the turn of Jammu and Kashmir, and our conversation was about that,” Omar Abdullah remarked.

He further revealed that the Home Minister had already conducted reviews of 11 states before turning attention to Jammu and Kashmir. Acknowledging the efforts made in the Union Territory, Abdullah stated that the region had performed reasonably well in adopting the new legal framework.

“To an extent, Jammu and Kashmir’s role in the implementation of these laws has been good. There are a few areas where we lacked, and those will be addressed,” he assured.

As a Union Territory, the primary responsibility of enforcing these laws rests with the central government. However, Abdullah emphasized the need for the elected government to play a proactive role in raising public awareness about the changes.

“Since Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory, it is not our direct responsibility to implement these laws. However, because these are new laws, efforts should be made to inform the public. For that, elected governments need to do more. We will fulfill our duties as required,” he added.

The meeting comes at a time when the central government is pushing for the effective implementation of the recently introduced criminal laws across the country. Abdullah’s remarks signal the administration’s commitment to ensuring the smooth execution of these legal reforms while addressing any gaps in the process.

As the new legal framework takes shape, the focus remains on collaborative efforts between the Union government and local administrations to facilitate a seamless transition and enhance public understanding of the revised laws.
