Panchayat Elections in J&K to Follow Weather Improvement, OBC Reservation Issue: LG Manoj Sinha

Jammu, Nov 16: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced that Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir will take place once weather conditions in the region improve. Speaking at the Jhiri Mela in Jammu, he addressed the delay in conducting the polls, citing constitutional issues related to OBC reservations as a key factor.

The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that amendments in the Panchayati Raj Act were made to address the absence of a reservation system for OBCs. He assured that the elections, which will empower 33,000 Panchayat members, are essential for driving development in the Union Territory.

Before his address, Sinha visited Baba Jitto’s Samadhi at Jhiri village and paid homage. He highlighted the spiritual and cultural significance of the annual Jhiri Mela, describing it as a tribute to the sacrifices of farmers like Baba Jitto. The event reflects India’s cultural unity and provides a platform for showcasing heritage, art, and craft.

Sinha also reiterated his commitment to transforming the agriculture sector, empowering farmers, and ensuring rural youth access equal opportunities. He praised the government’s strategic steps in agriculture and allied sectors under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

During the event, progressive farmers and officials were felicitated. The mela also featured cultural performances and stalls set up by government departments and agri-entrepreneurs.

Prominent attendees included Bharat Bhushan (Chairman, DDC Jammu), Anand Jain (ADGP Jammu), Ramesh Kumar (Divisional Commissioner, Jammu), and Sachin Kumar Vaishya (Deputy Commissioner, Jammu).

This development sets the stage for local elections to enhance grassroots governance and boost socio-economic progress in J&K.
