PMG Col. Vinod Kumar guides IIMC Jammu students on career opportunities
Jammu, August 16: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Jammu organised a thought-provoking guest lecture by Postmaster General Jammu, Col. Vinod Kumar, on “Career Opportunities in the Government Sector and the Role of the Department of Post.” The event aimed to provide insights into career paths for journalism students in the government sector.
Col. Vinod Kumar, an alumnus of IIMC Delhi, has been serving as a civil servant in the Indian Postal Service and the Indian Army since 2003. During his address, he highlighted various career opportunities in government departments, emphasising that “National Interest” should be the priority for aspiring journalists.
The session covered a wide range of topics, including the functioning of different ministries and the evolving landscape of new media. Col. Kumar emphasised the continued relevance of print media in the digital age while discussing the advantages and challenges posed by emerging technologies.
Students actively participated in a question-and-answer session, exploring various aspects of journalism and professional challenges. When asked about the significance of glamour and income in journalism careers, Col. Kumar advised keeping national interest and service to the common people as guiding principles.
A highlight of the event was Col. Kumar’s release of the first edition of the institute’s e-magazine, KALEIDO showcasing student work.
Regional Director IIMC Jammu, Dr. Dilip Kumar, expressed gratitude to Col. Kumar for his insightful address. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of IIMC Jammu alumni. Abhishek Khajuria shed light on journalism careers in the government sector, while Harry Walia provided awareness about opportunities in the private sector.
The event was attended by faculty members, including Dr. Vinit Utpal, Dr. Ravia Gupta, Vishv, Rajiv Kumar and Gulshan Kumar.
IIMC Jammu also celebrated its 60th Foundation Day of IIMC with enthusiasm. A special online lecture was delivered by Anant Vijay, a distinguished senior journalist and writer from Dainik Jagran. He reflected on the institution’s milestones and outlined its vision for the future, emphasising the importance of staying ahead in the dynamic media industry.
