Protests Erupt in Reasi Over Vandalisation of Hindu Shiv Temple
Katra, July 1, 2024: Tensions have flared in the Reasi district following the vandalisation of a Hindu Shiv Temple in the Dharmari area. The incident occurred during the night of June 29-30, 2024, when unknown individuals attacked and damaged the temple, sparking outrage among the local community.
In response, the people of Reasi have organized widespread protests, accusing the administration of failing to act swiftly against the culprits. As a result, a bandh is being observed in Reasi today, with many businesses and transport services coming to a standstill. The bandh reflects the community’s frustration and demand for justice.
Meanwhile, in Katra, which serves as the base camp for the Maa Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, there is a relaxation despite the unrest. Pilgrims continue to arrive in large numbers, and local authorities are ensuring that the pilgrimage is not disrupted.
Given the sensitivity of the situation, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. The SIT, led by officers of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank, aims to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The chief of the local sabha has also indicated that transport services may remain unavailable in Reasi during the bandh, adding to the inconvenience faced by residents. The community’s call for action and justice highlights the deep-seated anger and demand for accountability in the wake of the temple vandalisation.
Authorities are urging calm and have assured the public that all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
