Reasi Becomes J&K’s Second District to Launch SMILE Scheme: Aiming to Empower Vulnerable Communities

Reasi, June 17, 2025: In a significant step towards empowering vulnerable individuals and addressing the issue of begging, Reasi is set to become the second district in Jammu & Kashmir to roll out the SMILE Scheme (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE). The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik, marks a milestone in promoting dignity and opportunity for marginalized communities in the district.
The Project Appraisal Committee (PAC) has approved one application under the SMILE Scheme, signaling the beginning of a transformative journey to uplift those in need. The scheme aims to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities, rehabilitation, and socio-economic empowerment to vulnerable individuals, with a particular focus on tackling begging through comprehensive support systems.
Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The SMILE Scheme is a step towards restoring dignity and creating opportunities for the most marginalized in our society. Reasi is committed to ensuring the effective implementation of this program to empower individuals and build a more inclusive community.”
The SMILE Scheme includes measures such as skill development, vocational training, and financial assistance to help individuals transition from begging to sustainable livelihoods. The district administration is gearing up to ensure the scheme’s success through coordinated efforts and community engagement.
This development follows Reasi’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive growth, as seen in recent initiatives like the Dharti Aaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan and the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, both championed by DC Malik. The launch of the SMILE Scheme further solidifies Reasi’s commitment to social welfare and empowerment.
