Supreme Court Puts Stay on UP Order for Kanwar Yatra Name Plates
In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Mahua Moitra challenging the constitutionality of the Kanwar Yatra order issued by BJP state governments, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the requirement for food sellers to display proprietor names. The court ruled that vendors during the Kanwar Yatra will only need to display the type of food served, not the names of proprietors or staff.
The court issued notices to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh regarding the matter. This decision came in response to a recent Uttar Pradesh government order that required the names of proprietors to be displayed on shops and rehris during the Kanwar Yatra.
During the hearing, Congress leader and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi criticized the government order, describing it as “economic death” for food sellers.
