Tragic Drowning in River Basanter: Body of Puran Singh Recovered After Intensive Search

Samba, April 27, 2025: A tragic incident unfolded in Jattah village, Samba district, as Puran Singh, son of Charat Singh, drowned in the River Basanter on Saturday. After an extensive search operation spanning over a day, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, assisted by Samba Police, recovered his body around noon on Sunday.

According to local authorities, Puran Singh was bathing in one of the deep pools, locally known as “dabars,” in the River Basanter when the incident occurred. Despite warnings and banners placed by the police in the past, cautioning against swimming in these treacherous spots due to their depth & have ravines underneath, such incidents continue to claim lives.

The SDRF and police launched a relentless search operation immediately after the incident was reported, combing the river for the missing individual. Their efforts culminated in the recovery of Puran Singh’s body on Sunday. The police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
This incident adds to the growing list of lives lost in the River Basanter’s dangerous dabars, which have become notorious for their deceptive depth and hazardous conditions. Local residents have urged authorities to take stricter measures, such as increased patrolling or fencing off these areas, to prevent further loss of life.
Samba Police reiterated their appeal to the public to heed warning signs and avoid bathing in the river’s deep pools. The community mourns the loss of Puran Singh, and authorities are expected to review safety measures to avert such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
