Transport Department Issues Advisory for Parents of Minor Drivers in Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu, November 16, 2024 – The Transport Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir has issued an advisory to parents and guardians, warning against allowing their minor or underage children to drive two-wheelers or four-wheelers. This practice, deemed a serious offense under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, poses significant risks not only to the minors themselves but also to pedestrians and other road users.
The advisory outlines strict punitive actions for violations:
- Parental Accountability: Guardians or owners of vehicles will be held responsible if minors commit offenses. They may face imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of ₹25,000.
- Vehicle Registration: The registration of vehicles involved in such offenses will be canceled for a period of 12 months.
- Driving License Restrictions: Juvenile offenders will be barred from obtaining a learner’s license until they turn 25 years old.
- Juvenile Penalties: Fines and sentences for juvenile offenders will be determined under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000.
The Transport Department has emphasized that these provisions aim to curb the growing menace of underage driving, which endangers lives and public safety. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure compliance with the law to prevent legal consequences.
The advisory has been issued by the Transport Commissioner, Rajinder Singh Tara, and is intended to promote safer roads and a responsible driving culture in the region.
