U.S. Welcomes South Korea’s Rejection of Martial Law Declaration

Washington, D.C. – The United States has expressed its support for recent political developments in the Republic of Korea (ROK), following a statement by President Yoon Suk-yeol that he would rescind an emergency martial law declaration. This decision came after South Korea’s National Assembly unanimously rejected the declaration, ensuring adherence to the country’s Constitution.

In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. government welcomed President Yoon’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and resolving political disagreements peacefully. “We continue to expect political disagreements to be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law,” the statement emphasized.

The U.S. reaffirmed its steadfast support for the people of South Korea and highlighted the importance of the U.S.-ROK alliance, which is grounded in shared principles of democracy, stability, and the rule of law.
