Uber Launches Shikara Bookings in Srinagar’s Dal Lake: A First for India
Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir – In a groundbreaking move blending traditional charm with modern convenience, Uber has launched Shikara bookings on the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar. This marks the first time the global ride-hailing giant has extended its services to water transport in India.
The service, introduced in partnership with local Shikara owners, aims to boost tourism while supporting the livelihoods of the region’s boatmen. Tourists and locals can now book a ride on the picturesque Shikaras – the region’s traditional wooden boats – through the Uber app, offering a seamless and hassle-free experience.
Speaking at the launch, an Uber spokesperson highlighted the initiative as a step towards promoting local culture and sustainable tourism. “We are thrilled to bring this unique service to Srinagar, making the beauty of Dal Lake more accessible while empowering the community,” they said.
The Shikara service is available on the Uber app under a new “UberShikara” category, offering options for both sightseeing and transportation within Dal Lake. With real-time tracking, digital payment options, and easy scheduling, the service is expected to revolutionize how visitors experience the serene waters of Dal Lake.
Local boatmen have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about increased visibility and income. “This partnership with Uber ensures that we adapt to changing times while preserving our heritage,” said Mushtaq Ahmed, a Shikara owner.
Tourists have also lauded the move, calling it a convenient and innovative way to enjoy one of India’s most scenic destinations. With this launch, Uber continues to demonstrate its commitment to integrating global technology with local traditions.
This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the tourism experience in Jammu & Kashmir, solidifying Srinagar’s reputation as a must-visit destination.
