In a significant move to combat bovine smuggling, Udhampur Police have attached property valued at ₹10 lakhs belonging to a suspected smuggler. This marks the first such action in the district under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).

Case Details:

  • Accused Driver: Khursheed Ahmed, son of Ghulam Nabi, resident of Maitra, Ramban
  • Vehicle Owner: Arshad Khan, son of Kalu Khan, resident of Rathian, Tehsil and District Udhampur

During the investigation, a backward link was established, leading to the invocation of Sections 61(2) and 3(5) BNS against Arshad Khan, the vehicle owner. He was subsequently arrested. On March 24, 2025, an application was submitted to the court for the attachment of the vehicle (Tata Mobile JK14K 1765) under Section 107 BNSS. After hearings on March 25 and 26, the court granted the attachment order.

The case was investigated by SHO Police Station Chenani, Inspector Jaswinder Singh, under the supervision of SDPO Chenani, DSP Sukhvir Singh, and overall guidance of SSP Udhampur, Shri Amod Ashok Nagpure.

Despite repeated warnings, they continued activities that posed a threat to communal harmony in the region.
  • February 2025: Udhampur Police foiled two separate smuggling attempts in Majalta and Chenani, rescuing a total of eight bovines. Vehicles used in the smuggling operations were intercepted, and legal actions were initiated against the culprits.
  • August 2024: Three bovine smuggling attempts were thwarted, leading to the arrest of three individuals and the rescue of 17 bovine animals. Two vehicles used in the smuggling were seized.

Crackdown on Bovine Smuggling in Samba and Jammu Districts

Samba District:

  • intercepted a truck at the Tapyal area during a routine highway check. The driver attempted to evade the police but was apprehended. Fourteen bovines were found tied cruelly inside the vehicle without valid transportation permits. The driver, Mukesh Kumar from Bishnah, Jammu district, was arrested, and the vehicle seized.
  • April 2023: In a series of operations, Samba Police arrested eleven individuals, including two women, involved in bovine smuggling. Fifty-four animals were rescued, and five trucks were seized at various locations, including Gha Supwal, Rakh Mansar, and Rajpura.
