MPs, MLAs will now enjoy no legal shield from prosecution for taking bribes: Supreme Court
In an historic decision, Supreme Court rules that MPs, MLAs will now enjoy no legal shield from prosecution for taking bribes. 7 member bench led by CJI Chandrachud overruled a 1998 verdict granting immunity to lawmakers from prosecution for taking bribes to make speeches, and cast votes in the legislature. SC said “MP/MLAs are liable to be prosecuted Under Prevention of Corruption Act if they receive monetary benefits for their votes/ speech in Parliament/Assembly.”
