Sonam Wangchuk Arrested After Ladakh Protests Turn Deadly: Mobile Internet Suspended

Leh, Sep 26: Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested just days after violent protests in Ladakh left four people dead and over 60 injured. The unrest, which began as peaceful demonstrations demanding full statehood and Sixth Schedule protections under the Constitution, spiraled into clashes between protesters and security forces.

Authorities confirmed that Wangchuk was taken into custody early this morning, citing concerns over law and order. His arrest comes amid growing anger in the Union Territory, where youth-led demonstrations have intensified over the past week.

In a bid to contain the situation, mobile internet services have been suspended across Ladakh, while security forces remain on high alert in Leh and Kargil.

Political parties and civil society groups have condemned the arrest, warning it could further fuel public anger. Meanwhile, officials maintain that “strict action is necessary” to prevent further violence.
